Ixnay on the new X-Play!

So, I just got finished watching the new "leveled up" format of X-Play and I'm less than impressed. Okay, it's shiney and looks like it's being done from a real set now...and they've proved that with this new professional and expensive looking set, that they can get some of the heavy hitters of the game industry to look at them now (like Shane Kim: Corporate Vice President of Microsoft Game Studios), but wasn't the "looks like it was produced in someone's basement" look to X-Play the fun of it? It made Adam and Morgan feel like they were truly one of us who happened to luck up and fall into their dream job of reviewing games for a living. Now, they feel like a couple of game industry stiffs. Oh yeah and while we are on the subject of reviewing, they didn't actually review anything. They previewed a few games...and even dropped the names of a few others that they were looking forward to in 2008 but there were no sharp, funny, edgy reviews like they are known and watched for. Go figure.

I can tell already that I'm going to miss the humor of X-Play the most...especially when the message that they hadn't lost it came in the form of a bad skit that mixed The Office and Mass Effect. I'm the queen of offbeat humor and even I didn't get it and somehow I don't think I was the only one.

I guess I should reiterate that this was the season premiere of the show in it's new format and that it could get better in the coming episodes. Especially in a few months when the hype for MGS4 increases. Interview with Hideo Kojima? I guess we'll just have to see.

G4, please don't let X-Play, the only video game review show that matters, become the only video game review show that used to matter. It would be a crime of epic proportions.

Confessions of a Kevin Pereira...fan?

Confession: I like G4. I do. I am a gamer that actually likes G4. I admittedly don't watch the station as much as I used to since they give the gaming shows a special timeslot amongst all the nonsense they now call their "line up" but hey, you gotta pay your bills, right?

Some of my favorite TV personalities have come from G4, most notably Morgan Webb and Adam Sessler who I tend to treat like little collectable salt and pepper shakers in the sense that I can't have one without the other.

Not counting Martin Sargent, who I hated, I've pretty much just enjoyed the fact that G4 has always hired people who were likeable by more than just the people who paid them and down to earth to the fans for more than the just the half hour to hour they had to deal with them.

So here's another confession: I hated Kevin Pereira.

To me, he single handedly destroyed the mold from which G4 hosts, with the exception of Martin Sargent, were previously created from. He was rude, cocky, annoying, and I didn't find him the least bit funny even though to me, he tried the hardest out of the all the G4 hosts.

I stopped watching G4 for a while and a lot of changes happened. Sarah Lane, Kevin Rose. Gone. Tina Woods, Laura Foy, Cory Rouse. Gone, gone, and gone. Adam and Morgan where the only people I recognized. Oh, and him.

I didn't exactly welcome Attack the of the Show (which had replaced my beloved ScreenSavers) at first but over time, I learned to tolerate it. Tolerate turned to like. And like turned to "7 P.M. is AOTS time!". But what I didn't notice was that while this show was growing on me, so was Pereira.

It occured to me that Kevin was the only person who dared to have such a different kind of persona while he was on TV. Adam Sessler, for example, has an alter ego for when he hosts X-Play. He's this clueless, overly happy go lucky guy who more often than not, is the butt of Morgan's (or even the narrator's) jokes. But overall, in real life, he keeps the likable part about him at least. It should also be noted that Mr. Sessler has a Bachlor's Degree from UCLA in English Literature.

The truth about Kevin Pereira is that he is a sweet, humbled and funny guy who was smart enough to pull off a TV persona that was actually nothing at all like him. He blogs regularly (more than any current G4 host that I know of) and just really likes being around people. Smiling to take a picture with a fan, that's Morgan Webb. Getting drunk and playing hours of Rock Band with a fan and taking photos of it, that is Kevin Pereira.

It has been a while.

It's been a while since I've had a public blog (outside of the one Myspace provides) but, it's good to be back. No one is going to read it, but at least when I google my name I can!
